people who are more into godzilla than i am why does he look like that.

okay, so i’m really into Godzilla, and i can dish abt Jet Jaguar

so, this is how my guy was originally looking. JJ is infamous in the fandom for looking goofy as hell and has over time become beloved for his bizarre appearance and ludicrous abilities. in his initial appearance (Godzilla vs.Megalon) he is a robot that was designed by two men who lived together and seemed to be raising a child together

and as u can see, he was initially just the size of a guy. so, u might be asking yourself, “how’d he get so kaiju sized?” you might be asking, pleading, “Scout, how’d he get so kaiju sized i need to know”. well, i’ll tell u, my sweet summer child.

the official canon reason stated in the film is that he “reprogrammed himself to change his size”

so, why’s he look so goofy? there’s a long behind the scenes story behind that:

see, Toho ran a contest for children to submit their original monster designs, and the first prize winner’s creation would have a suit based on their submission and the character would appear in the next Godzilla film in a starring role. the winner was a boy named Masaaki Sano, and his creation was named “Red Alone”. here’s a brief look at Red Alone’s original design:

However, Toho kind of dragged their feet on bringing Red Alone to the silver screen, and in the process, he changed radically. The name began to change across several iterations. Red Alone became “Red Aaron”, then “Jet Alone”, then “Aceman”, and finally:

Jet Jaguar.

In the process, he was redesigned several times, here is concept art created by an unknown artist under supervision of special effects director Teruyoshi Nakano:

Nakano was initially reluctant in reinventing Red Alone as Jet Jaguar, due to feeling that there were already too many Ultraman-like heroes appearing at the time. However, he became inspired after deciding that rather than focusing on making Jet Jaguar’s design attractive, he would aim for it to be deliberately unattractive and obnoxious.

so… that’s what we’re starting with. and, all things considered, i think the designers for Singular Point did a pretty good job redesigning him.

HOWEVER i do absolutely acknowledge how absolutely goofy this fuckin short-stack design is. him legs too short him gotdang body!

for context, tho: his design changes over the course of the show as he advances from being a small piloted mech to being a tall sapient robot and it’s a pretty cool way to handle the idea of him becoming larger within a more grounded setting. here’s all of his designs:

i’ve tried looking up info for the designer’s thought process, but i can’t find anything. if i were to guess, i’d say his prototype design that he starts with probably looks a little goofy on purpose because at that point, they wanted to convey that he is crudely made and a little silly.
